our weekend

dear self,

next summer when you think that going to the fair sounds like a grand idea, remember this…
it costs $10 for you and your husband to go on a ride. that’s right. 43 seconds of fun on the scrambler costs ten dollars. instead of getting sucked into the rides, think of all the things you could buy. each ride is 2 1/2 drinks at starbucks, or a cute shirt for finley, or a pair of baby legs. and don’t think you can just go and walk around without spending money. some way, somehow, a certain someone (Brian) will get suckered into buying something ridiculous (like maybe a crib-sized silk duvet for finley).
Remember all the 40 year old men wearing shirts that say such sexually vulgar things that you accidentally throw up a tiny bit in your mouth. And then remember how you shed a few tears when you realized that creepy mc creeperson is wearing that shirt while holding hands with his 10 year daughter. in short, unless you want to take out a second mortgage on your home…don’t decide to go to the fair next year.
ok, so while the rides were a HUGE rip-off, we actually did have fun. Finley loved checking out all the animals, and she even got to pet a few. All the lights, sounds, and crazy people gave her lots to look at. which is a good thing, considering she was running on zero sleep. and even though i can think of thousands of things i’d rather spend the money on, we had a great time going on the rides, and indulging in some sort of deliciousness that tasted like fried air.

In other news, Finley has finally outgrown her strawberry pajamas. These are no ordinary pajamas. She has had these p.j.s in every size since she was born. Unfortunately, they don’t make them any bigger, otherwise she’d be wearing these jammies in high school. These are the pjs that led to us calling her “our little strawberry bon bon”. It was a sad night when I dressed her in strawberry jammies for the last time. Yes, incase you are wondering…I get VERY attached to some of her special clothes. Maybe I’ll make a pillow of them them. (that’s a joke, mimi..put your thread away)
Saturday we went to Gene Coulon Park for fish n’ chips, a walk along the water, and some fun on the toys.

the last few weeks of summer…

The last few weeks have been pretty eventful in our family. Brian has been busy working as usual, but was able to get away for a company fishing trip to La Push. He was the only one in the group who isn’t an avid fisher, he’s never even been, but somehow he walked away winning the prize for biggest catch, and most fish caught. Neither of us are big seafood eaters, but it turns out that when you marinade tuna in whiskey, brown sugar, soy sauce and olive oil, you can hardly even tell its not chicken. Speaking of Brian and work…my hammer-slinging hubby is hanging up his carharts and taking a new role in the company. You can now call him Brian Neuenschwander, Project Manager. The bad news is that he won’t be working with his hands, which he loves. Instead, you’ll find him yacking away on his cell phone with various people in the construction industry. The good news is that this job means more money and less time working. As much as we’re jazzed about the extra financial cushion, we’re mostly excited about the extra time we’ll have with Papa.

Finley and I missed Brian very much while he was away. We kept busy with playdates, trips to the park, and a visit to a special “petting zoo”. I’m slowly letting go of the fact that she’s not my little baby anymore….she’s turning into a big girl. She’s recognizing all sorts of words (book, drink, blankie, lamby, bath, phone). We say, “Where’s lamby?” and she crawls off to find her lamby. She’s also getting pretty close to walking. She’ll take two or so baby steps and then change her mind and decide to crawl the rest of the way. I’ve been getting ready for the big day coming up next month-Finley’s birthday! I got the invitations finished and am now working on a very nifty idea for the cake. There are a few more photos in the 10 month album.

baby signs

So, I’ve always been sort of indifferent about baby sign language. I suppose I thought it was a lot of work, a huge commitment, etc… Well, lately I’ve been having trouble with Finley when she is “all done” eating. She starts throwing food on the floor and grabbing for the spoon. Basically, things get messy fast. I started thinking how nice it would be if she had a better (cleaner) way of saying all done. I pulled out a book we have on baby signs and brushed up on the signs that interested me (all done, eat, water, more, and book). Book is kind of random, but we read tons of books and the lazy part of me thinks it would be so nice to sign “book” and off she crawls to get us a book. I started signing these words this weekend, and it really wasn’t that difficult. This morning when I said and signed the word book she crawled to the book shelf and started pulling out books (we’re not quite to the fetching stage). I thought maybe it was a fluke. Surely she couldn’t know what it means already? I tried it two other times throughout the day and each time she crawled off to look at a book. That can’t be denied. 3 for 3 means she really gets it. I’m sure it will be quite a while before she is signing back at us, but I am just amazed at how quickly she is grasping it all. Of course I think that my daughter is brilliant, but sometimes I underestimate how much she is capable of. She is one smart cookie.

the aquarium

On Sunday we had planned on taking finley to the zoo, but after checking the weather report we decided the aquarium would be the safer alternative. While nothing beats the zoo, the aquarium offered lots of fun things for finley to look at. Some of her favorites were the octopus (my favorite), the seals, and the waterfalls. Oh, and on our way to lunch we walked by a group playing some African music. We just had to stop and listen because she loves music and dancing. Her version of dancing is sort of a sitting down pelvic thrust, just so you can visualize. Fortunately, finley had her maraca with her so she could play along, too. I probably should have put out a tip jar, because she really stole the show. One of the dancers came over and told me how great it is that we’re getting her into rhythm and instruments. Truth be told, the only reason Finley has gotten into instruments is because we had them in the preschool and more often than not we listen to super cheesy baby praise music. But heck, I’m not one to turn down a parenting compliment.
All in all, it was a wonderful day…great idea, Mimi! Hopefully we’ll see another sunny day soon so we can make it to the zoo. Check out more pics from the day in the album.

happy two year anniversary!!!

Today is our two year anniversary. I could say that it feels like just yesterday that we got married, but that would be a lie. I always joke that it feels like we’ve been married for 10 years. And I don’t mean that in a bad way at all, quite the opposite in fact. When I think back over the last two years it feels like we have come so far, grown up so much, gotten to know each other so much better, learned so much about our own depravity, and learned how to love more selflessly (still working on that, and probably always will be). We’ve gone from a young, free, dual income family of two, to a slightly older, settled, single income family of three. We’ve experienced the miracle of Finley’s birth, the physical and emotional fatigue of meeting a newborns demanding needs, and the complete joy that we’ve found in loving and raising our daughter that words absolutely cannot describe. Yes, we have definitely learned a lot about our love for each other and Christ’s love for us. I am incredibly lucky to have you as my husband, Brian. I look forward to conquering the years ahead with the same humor, feistiness, joy, and commitment that’s gotten us to where we are. I love you, bobi bear!

our week in review

Well, the little bon bon and I just got back from another week in Chelan with Mimi and some family friends. As usual we had a great time enjoying the sun and water and all the extra time with Mimi. A highlight of the week was taking Finley to the water park. Note to self: do not lather yourself up with oil and then take your 9 month old down a water slide. We flew down the slide and had a real dicey moment where i thought we were both going under. Fortunately, we didn’t have anymore mishaps. We spent most of the day in the baby play area, and only returned to the bigger slides after i had been thoroughly de-greasified. As soon as we convert the video recorder tape to a cd i’ll upload some footage, because it really is precious.
Finley also perfected some new tricks this week. She loves to play “so big”. I say “How biiiiiiiiiigggg is finley?” and she lifts her arms above her head while i say “so big!”. And she learned how to wave hi/bye. She loves waving to anything that moves…birds, trees blowing in the wind, strangers walking by, the lady cleaning the windows and red robin, you name it. I think she really understands what the action means, because this morning after brian kissed us goodbye she sat looking out the window waving bye bye, unprompted. Such a smart little girl!
The other highlight of our week was going for walks with Mimi early in the morning at the River Park. I say early because finley decided that during vacation would be a good time to arise an hour and a half earlier than normal. Thankfully, my loving husband presented me with some “starbucks money” for the week, which if you know us, you understand what a huge gesture this was. I am eternally grateful, because caffeine has never been so truly needed. Anyway, back to the walk. We experienced this weird phenomenon as we walked around the park. In the seven o’clock hour people were friendly. As we passed people they smiled, said hello, stopped to look at finley, asked questions about her. I know this doesn’t sound noteworthy, but it was just so refreshing to see that people are still nice and happy and friendly…let alone at that hour in the morning. It seems that more and more often I have encounters with angry, grouchy people and I was so moved by the friendliness we experienced every morning. Kinda weird I know, but it made me happy.
Anyway, we had a great time with our friends and family and are so thankful to spend another summer making memories in Chelan. `If only Brian had been there, it would have been perfect. Instead of vacationing with his family, Brian worked long hours and then came home to work more on our deck. And what a beautiful deck it is! I came home to a finished deck complete with assembled patio furniture! I can’t wait to dine al fresco! Yes, Finley is waving at the cars driving by…

Here is a little video of finley showing off her new tricks.

This is Finley reading one of her favorite books. She’s either really vain, or thinks that her reflection is a friend.
