lyla- 3 months

our little lyla girl at 3 months:

smiles a ton
coos and makes sweet sounds
takes a bottle when needed like a champ
tolerates her big sister {adalaide} squealing “hi ya-ya” in her face, and also the occasional eye poke
eats every 3 hours during the day
usually sleeps from 8:30 or 9  eats around 4:30-5 ish and wakes up for the day around 9:00
still sleeps most of the day, but she’s getting more sensitive to noise
takes a binky
sleeps swaddled
enjoys tummy time for short periods of time
doesn’t spit up {3 for 3-HOORAY} but has really stinky toots
rolled from her tummy to back-only once so probably a fluke
has dark gray eyes-i’m guessing they’ll go brown

i didn’t get around to taking her for a check up until 2 weeks ago. she was almost 13 lbs (75th %) and 24 inches long (90th %). Interestingly, all 3 girls have had pretty much the exact same stats as babies.

here are some recent photos of her…

anytime lyla is within reach, adalaide HAS to kiss her.

such a sweet sight to wake up to

see that dimple? i love it!

i thought she looked so adroable unswaddled so i had to capture it.

i finally put together her announcement and mailed them, even though most people have met her by now.

:: i got these shoes for the girls and they are pretty much the cutest shoes of all time. finley calls them her “tom toms” which makes them even cuter.

:: we’ve been listening to seeds family worship cds. i think we have just about every kid praise cd that exists and this is one of my favorites. the songs are taken from scripture and are really, really catchy and fun to sing along to.

:: this weekend brian went on a guys weekend to huntington beach. my wonderful mother came over to keep me company and we worked on this sewing project. we finished finley’s and it is quite cute. but it was my first time using bias tape, and lets just say there is a lot of room for improvement.

:: one of my best/oldest friend’s husband started an online Christian radio station, proclaim radio. amongst other things, the site has two playlists with TONS of songs so that you don’t have to listen to the same 10 songs over and over and over.

:: since the bachelorette has really let us down this season, we’ve really thrown ourselves into our other favorite summer show-so you think you can dance. as you probably know, finley is really into dancing so we dvr it and let her watch it with us. this is our all time favorite routine. i think brian and i even tried to learn it a couple years ago-ha!

:: i got this swimsuit from modcloth and wore it this weekend. before you go knocking it, you should know that it is seriously a miracle swimsuit. i know my husband is definitely a two-piece kinda guy, but there was just no way that was happening this summer. as far as one pieces go, this is actually pretty cute on…more retro than matronly.

:: one more reference to brian cause he brought this home from the beach for the girls and i’m so impressed with his taste.

:: we’ve been eating basil like it’s going out of style. i think this looks tasty and i would make it tonight if only we had peaches.

:: in the last 5 years we’ve only seen one movie in the theater {bridesmaids}. we saw the preview for this movie and can’t wait for it to come out. two movies in one year, hot dog! warning: you might find the trailer slightly offensive. did i ever mention that while changing lyla she shot poop right in my eye? it really happens…

4th of july

i don’t use the word ‘perfect’ very often, but that’s pretty much how our day was. the weather was beautiful, we walked the girls in the kiddie parade, they loved watching the real parade, we saw lots of old and new friends, the girls cooled off in the pool at my parents house, i napped in the shade with lyla, brian played pickle ball, we danced at the park to the live music, and finished the night watching the fireworks with our friends. it was the best day. hooray for summer FINALLY being here!

you can also watch the video here if it’s fuzzy or you want to see it bigger.

also, it’s been brought to my attention that i need to do a better job posting our photos in the online album, so i’m starting that back up again.

our week in photos

Boy oh boy did we have a fun filled week {with lots of photos to show for it}!

Lyla and I went to a ladies only birthday celebration for my s-i-l. As much as we love our husband’s company, it was so much fun to get together without them and the distraction of the older kids. In true girly spirit we ended up doing our nails and makeup.

lyla and her cousin Peter-who is one month older

my last manicure was for our wedding. 5 YEARS AGO!!!

do you have any idea how hard it is for me not to gobble her chubby cheeks up? Seriously, I have an obsession with kissing them.

we went for a hike

lots for baby girl to take in

there’s a wheelchair accessible trail which was perfect for our double jogger

a flower for lyla

FREEDOM!

i made pioneer woman’s cinnamon rolls for a friend’s birthday brunch and our fathers day breakfast. holy mother of goodness! brian had 6 in one sitting. i’m glad i only made half the recipe {30 rolls} because they are dangerously good.

some special artwork for daddy

this is the card from finley. i wrote exactly what she said without adding or omitting anything. i’m so proud that she came up with all these thoughtful things on her own. a keepsake for sure!

our weekend

bocce ball cheerleaders

first ice-cream cone

lunch at the zoo

trying to kiss the alpaca

palomino. mmmmmmm.

and just for kicks, here we are at the same restaurant 5 years ago.

thanks for sharing your special no-kid, anniversary night with us!

p.s. my fake n’ bake tan is hilarious. and by hilarious, i mean embarrassing. someone should have intervened.

p.p.s. just noticed brian has food in his teeth

p.p.s.s. my lumberjack husband is growing out that beard for another month! whats the deal with bachelor parties and weird facial hair? i don’t get it. i guess i’m lucky he’s not doing a mustache.

p.p.p.s.s. he’ll probably suprise me with a mustache based on that last statement.

finley { 3 and 1/2 }

On one hand it’s hard to believe that our first baby will be turning 4 at her next birthday. Four sounds so so so old! But on the other hand it’s hard to deny that she’s growing right before our eyes {hello door slamming and talking back}.

Ever since she watched her first disney movie a few months back she’s been enamored with all things princess. It has made shopping at target with her really annoying, as she can spot princess paraphernalia a mile away: fruit snacks, band aids, underwear, pjs, toys, books, bath soap. We’ve indulged her a bit with these little figurine toys. She loves to dress them, set them up, and then take their picture with my phone. The little boy from our doll house set makes a perfect flynn rider, prince charming, prince eric, etc. And of course she still loves singing along to the disney soundtrack cd, at full volume, with perfect choreography to the beat.

We’ve officially entered into the ‘outfit change’ stage. Several times a day she runs back to her room, changes clothes and chooses a new hair accessory. Each time she requests that i close my eyes so that she can debut herself with a proper ‘ta-da’. The pride on her face *almost*  makes me forget how much unnecessary laundry i do.

Her and adalaide share a room now. We’d been dreading doing this, but it’s actually worked out beautifully. They love it, and because it takes them so long to actually fall asleep I end up with MORE time to myself. genius! The laughter and squealing that comes from their room is so adorable and it melts my only-child heart.

Finley keeps us laughing with her elaborate imagination and crazy vocabulary. Things that aren’t meant to be funny become hilarious when you hear a 3-year-old use words like “suddenly” and “apparently” in her every day language. Over the last year we’ve gotten to know a lot more about her imaginary friend, Jenny. Basically Jenny leads this really awesome life and gets to do all sorts of cool stuff, like stay the night at disneyland and drink wine {not sure where that came from since we aren’t wine drinkers}. Jenny has a whole family who we hear about every now and then. Like the time Finley needed something and I told her to wait until I was done feeding Lyla, and she informed that, “Anuary {like January without the J} can breastfeed the baby and do other stuff at the same time”. Anuary one-ups me a lot…

She is an incredibly strong willed child, and i’m sure in her perfect world she would rule the roost. Some days I get so tired of hearing my voice say the same things over and over, and over and over. On those days I try to calm myself by remembering that her strong will be a good thing later on in life {i know mine was}. It helps a little, just a little.

She loves to do “set-ups”. The other day we were all laying out in the sun and she got an idea to do a beach party. She brought out cups of water with straws, a little table for our beverages, a potted plant to be the center piece, and a drawing of our family at the beach which she hung with 3,000 pieces of tape off the table. She loves playing house and loves to do set-ups in forts, in our outdoor climbing toy, in closets, and especially in the back of our SUV. Ever since we got our car she’s been begging to go camping so we can make a bed in the back of our car. I don’t think there’s a bribe in the world that would get brian to do it, so maybe her and i will have ourselves a sleepover in the driveway. Unless there is a bribe, Bri? Come on…. 3 little ones, dirt, fire, sharing a bed. Doesn’t that sound like a blast!

anyway, back to finley..

she also loves: helping in the kitchen, drawing pictures of our family, riding her scooter, dancing, doing puzzles, and playing in the backyard.

she is a crazy, feisty, fun-loving girl who is going, going, going all day long. in several years when i think back to this age, i will remember her gabbing my ear off, with a huge smile, and a sassy look in her eye. we love her!

a few things to note…

…about our trip to kelsey creek park today.

1. this was the first time we’ve done an activity like this where adalaide was able to get out of the stroller and walk. i wish i’d had my video camera, because she was so proud of herself and just kept squealing.

2. two boys were being really nasty to finley at the playground. i kept waiting for one of their oblivious dads to say something, and just when i was about to intervene i heard finley say, “don’t talk to me like that. it’s mean!” i was so proud of her for standing up for herself, especially knowing how shy she is around new people.

3. someone thought i was a nanny. again. i’m sure in twenty years looking young will be a compliment, but i’m ready to stop looking sixteen. maybe i need some new clothes? more makeup? hmmm.

4. on the way home we chatted about the boys at the park who were unkind. finley asked, “why can’t jesus come down from the sky and talk to those boys?” moments like that melt my heart.

mama’s day

This year i am feeling incredibly blessed. i have so much in my heart that i am thankful for, but lack of sleep is leaving me at a loss for words. Thank goodness I already wrote my cards! So, I’ll just say this: I love/appreciate/admire my mothers more than words can say, and I absolutely LOVE LOVE LOVE being a mama these girls. It’s not always easy, or pretty, or fun, but it is the best job in the whole wide world. a true gift from God.
